Fine motor difficulties
Assessment, adaptations and intervention.
Use a fine motor assessment to identify areas needing support. Follow up with:
Multi-sensory handwriting programs to improve writing fluency.
Targeted fine motor activities (e.g. threading, pegboards, play dough) to strengthen hand and arm coordination.
Allow adaptive clothing (e.g. Velcro fastenings, slip-on shoes) to reduce dressing challenges and promote independence.
Ensure staff know how to help with splints, fastenings, and other physical needs to support daily functioning and comfort.
Use tools like laptops or text-to-speech software to bypass barriers to handwriting and enable full participation in learning.
Supply tools like pencil grips, sloped writing boards, and specialist scissors to improve comfort and control during tasks.
