Communicating own needs

Expressing needs, preferences, or discomfort. (Social understanding and communcation)

  • Enable alternative communication methods (e.g. gestures, typing, drawing) to ensure every learner can express themselves effectively.
  • Help pupils understand their own communication style. This builds self-awareness and self-advocacy.
  • Explicitly model communication strategies using their preferred communication method (e.g. use of sign/objects of reference, speech, gesture).
  • Recognise that at moments of dysregulation, the learner may not be able to effectively communicate their needs. Prioritise regulation over speech/communication.
