Writing fluency

Learner finds writing tiring or effortful/has difficulties starting the task and organising ideas.

  • Explicitly model the writing process using guided and independent tasks. This shows the learner what is expected and builds writing confidence step by step.

  • Provide assistive technology or reading/writing supports (e.g., text-to-speech). This helps the learner explore tools that support idea expression and independence.

  • Reduce unnecessary writing (e.g., dates or titles). This allows the learner to focus energy on developing core writing skills.

  • Limit written homework requirements. This helps the learner conserve energy and engage more positively with writing tasks.

  • Offer alternative ways to show learning (e.g., drawing, voice recording). This supports varied expression and reduces writing fatigue.

  • Chunk writing tasks into manageable parts. This helps the learner pace themselves and avoid overwhelm.

  • Encourage alternative recording methods beyond handwriting. This allows the learner to express ideas effectively using preferred tools.

  • Use a scribe or voice recording for selected tasks. This supports verbal expression and builds confidence in communication.

  • Teach word processing skills. This enables the learner to record ideas in flexible and accessible formats
