Making friends and social situations

  • Introduce yellow bibs for easy peer identification in the playground to help VI pupils locate friends independently.

  • Provide a ‘Buddy Bench’ or ‘Bus Stop’ as a meeting point to support social interaction and visibility for sighted peers.

  • Implement a Buddy System with a fully sighted peer to encourage inclusion and build confidence in social settings.

  • Offer whole-school peer awareness training via the VI team to promote understanding and empathy among classmates.

  • Introduce inclusive playground games with clear rules to ensure all pupils can participate meaningfully.

  • Create a safe hub or designated area for the VI pupil to provide a secure space for rest and social engagement.

  • Provide mobility and independence training to build confidence and safe navigation skills across school settings.
