Severe and complex medical needs

Guidance and advice.

  • Understand medical documentation. Staff should be familiar with care plans and medical guidance to respond appropriately and confidently.

  • Establish strong communication with families. Maintain regular, timely contact with parent carers to share updates and coordinate support.

  • Identify additional support needs. Assess and plan for specific needs (e.g. diet, toileting, swimming, equipment use, breaktimes, clubs) to ensure full inclusion.

  • Equip staff with necessary resources. Provide items like lockable medicine cabinets, first aid kits, and fridges to safely manage medical needs.

  • Plan transitions thoroughly. Ensure adaptations and training (e.g. manual handling, medication protocols) are in place before the learner joins the class.

  • Support through loss or change. Ensure staff feel equipped to support the learner and peers through bereavement or emotional challenges, with access to training and SENCO guidance.

  • Update individual support plans regularly. Work with the SENCO to keep plans current and informative for all staff, including temporary cover.

  • Use ICT to support learning and communication Explore technology options with the SENCO to enhance access and engagement.

  • Promote independence and success, Provide scaffolded opportunities for group work and tasks that build confidence and autonomy.

  • Consider fatigue in planning. Adjust workload and expectations to accommodate energy levels and avoid overexertion.

  • Maintain connection during absence. Use home-school communication to foster belonging when the learner is off-site. Plan reintegration to address learning gaps.

  • Record and review medical advice. Ensure all professional guidance is documented in the support plan and reviewed regularly.
