Handwriting

Learner has uneven/incorrect letter formation/illegible or difficult to decipher.

  • Provide left/right-handed tools, pencil grips, and writing slopes.  This helps the learner write more comfortably and with better control.

  • Encourage and support development of word processing skills.  This enables the learner to record ideas in varied and accessible formats.

  • Allow and encourage alternative methods of recording (e.g., matching, ordering, voice recording, oral presentation).  This gives the learner flexible ways to express understanding and reduce writing fatigue.

  • Check the suitability of chair, desk, posture, and paper placement. This ensures physical comfort and supports effective handwriting.

  • Provide fine motor skill development activities.  This strengthens hand coordination and supports writing readiness.

  • Use explicit and adapted handwriting instruction (e.g., multisensory approaches).  This helps the learner understand and practise handwriting in ways that suit their needs.

  • Assess handwriting capabilities using a structured approach that looks at both motor skills and written output.
