Ensuring practitioners understand the learner’s needs and apply inclusive strategies.

  • Provide regular Deaf awareness training for staff so that practitioners understand the learner’s needs and apply inclusive strategies (DAHIT offers this training free of charge).

  • Use the learner’s radio aid (ALD) consistently and correctly (e.g. operate, mute, and position the device properly) to ensure the learner hears clearly.

  • Establish a central access point for assistive listening making it easier for staff and learners to locate and secure equipment.

  • Use classroom noise meters to monitor sound levels. This encourages quieter environments for better listening.

  • Give staff time to learn equipment and apply adjustments to ensure learners have full curriculum access.

  • Adapt mobile phone policies for deaf or hearing-impaired learners (e.g. allow necessary use of phones for accessibility tools to support communication and independence).
