Response Inhibition

Difficulty stopping and thinking before acting.

  • Introduce the concept of delayed gratification with short wait times that gradually increase. This helps the learner build patience and self-control over time.

  • Support the learner in valuing rewards earned over time. This encourages persistence and motivation through achievable goals.

  • Use tools like comic strip conversations to help the learner reflect on the consequences of impulsive actions. This builds empathy and helps the learner understand how their behaviour affects others.

  • Identify situations where the learner struggles to inhibit behaviour and offer early support. This prevents escalation and promotes positive choices.

  • Use visual reminders to prompt the learner to pause before acting. This supports impulse control and encourages thoughtful decision-making.

  • Include regular movement or brain breaks. This helps the learner regulate energy levels and maintain focus.

  • Agree on strategies with the learner for moving between spaces (e.g., holding a special object or using a visual list). This helps the learner feel more secure and in control during transitions.
